I love movies, it’s my favourite art form and story-telling method. As a person who is addicted to stories, movie-watching is an experience. It’s a way to uncover and understand compelling truths about the human condition told through the seemingly harmless stories. 2016 has been a good year for movies and below is the list of my favourites for this year:
Stunning visual (I’m a sucker for beautiful cinematography work), great direction, powerful scores and Amy Adams’ best performance to date. One of the best and most beautiful movie endings I’ve seen in the last 3 years.
2. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
I have a very special relationship with Star Wars movies. As a kid growing up in a small town in a middle of nowhere, Empire Strikes Back was the greatest thing I’ve seen and known of. Princess Leia was my first ever female character in movies that I looked up to. Now that we have Rey (The Force Awakens) and Jyn Erso as the lead characters of Star Wars movies and rightfully so, I feel like The Force is finally well-balanced. Again, stunning visual, great story and brilliant acting, I was so happy that this movie turned out awesome.
3. The Nice Guys
It surprises me how much I enjoyed this mystery-crime thriller + action comedy about an unlikely duo investigating the case of a missing girl and a dead porn star in 1970’s LA. The plot twist is brilliant, I have to say that I couldn’t make the connections before the whole thing is explained towards the end of the movie. It’s definitely one of the most entertaining, witty and funny movies of 2016 with a high rewatch value.
4. Nocturnal Animals
This is Amy Adams’ year. I wrote a blog post about this movie, that’s how much I’m impressed by this movie from the fashion designer turned film director, Tom Ford.
The biggest surprise of 2016. THE Valentine’s Day movie to end all Valentine’s Day movies, enough said.
The Witch – Left me feeling uneasy, that’s how psychologically affecting this movie is.
Hell or High Water – Surprisingly entertaining, Chris Pine and Jeff Bridges are awesome in this movie.
Lights Out – Simple story, effective characters and well-paced. IMO, the most entertaining horror movie of 2016.
The First Avenger: Civil War – Everything a blockbuster movie should be. Entertaining without being shallow.
Highly Anticipated Movies of 2016 that I don’t get to see before the year ends:
Manchester By The Sea
The Edge of Seventeen
La La Land
My favourite trailer to end this post 🙂
